January Student-Athlete of the Month

WATERLOO - The Hawkeye Community College athletic department has recognized Brandon Beard of men’s track & field and Joanna Topham of women’s track and field as January’s student-athletes of the month.

Brandon, a freshman from Western Dubuque has had an impressive start to his college career on the track. In the first meet in January, Brandon, along with his brother, Kenneth, Cole Willert, and Jack Jensen teamed up in the 4x400 Meter Relay to run a time of 3:19.14 to qualify the RedTail team in their inaugural season for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in Lubbock, Texas in March.

Beard also qualified himself for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in the open 400 Meter dash this past weekend after finishing in a time of 49.93 inside the UNI-Dome at the Jack Jennett Open.

Topham, a Griswold, IA native is picking up right where she left off from the RedTail Cross Country season. Topham ran a time of 19:22.3 at the 2017 National Meet held in Fort Dodge and finished 36th overall.  With an impressive cross country season, Topham was selected as a National Junior College Cross Country Coaches Association All-American. With this accolade she was the first RedTail to earn All-American status amongst any sport that the College has hosted since its inception of athletics in 2015.

In her first meet on the oval for the RedTails, Topham qualified for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in the mile run by posting a time of 5:22.62. She later qualified for in the 3000M race at the Jack Jennett Open with a time of 11:05.35.
