DES MOINES – It seems the famed blue oval at the Drake Relays became a stage for the new kids on the block over the weekend.
That's because Hawkeye Community College's first-year men's track and field team blazed its way to a surprising second-place finish in the 4x200-meter relay at the Drake Relays. The quartet of Brandon Beard, Kenneth Beard, Avery Moore and Riley Little bolted to a time of 1 minute, 26.83 seconds to win their heat. The performance earned the RedTails a runner-up placing overall as they finished just behind Big 10 powerhouse Purdue.
The 4x200's finish was the highlight of the weekend, but other RedTails' relay teams performed well, too. Jakob Luna, Moore, Cole Willert and Konner Roth dashed to a 10th-place finish in the spring medley relay with a time of 3:32.17. Meanwhile, Jack Jensen, Ryan Millikin, David Thompson and Peter Torkleson teamed up to place 15th in the distance medley relay with a time of 10:47.86.
In the 4x100, Kenneth Beard, Moore, Little and Luna finished 25th with a time of 43.05. In the 4x400, the Beard brothers, Jensen and Willert placed 28th in 3:24.32.
The RedTails return to action next at Iowa Western Community College for the Region XI Outdoor Championships on May 4-5.
