WATERLOO–Thanks to beautiful, sunny conditions, the Hawkeye Community College women's soccer team soaked up its season opener against Southeastern Community College on Wednesday. However, when the match reached its 82nd minute, the RedTails' Kelsey Bakken decided it had gone on long enough.
Bakken found the corner of the net at the 81:30 mark, breaking a 1-1 tie. The RedTails' defense then kept Southeastern at bay for a 2-1 victory.
The RedTails got off to a fast start as forward Sara Swiatly broke away from defenders and scored the first goal in the 30th minute. In the second half, Southeastern forward Isabela Dias found the back of the net to even the score.
The RedTails head to Parkland College on Sunday, September 2. The match kicks off at 4:00pm.
