Hawkeye Community College Men's Soccer went toe-to-toe with Southeastern Community College on Wednesday night but fell just short in a 3-2 road defeat.
The RedTails struck first in the 15th minute when Luke Hobson buried a finish off an assist from Owen Harvey. Southeastern quickly responded just two minutes later to level the score, then pulled ahead in the 28th minute to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Hawkeye showed resilience in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Alexander Aslanidis converted a penalty kick to tie the match 2-2. The game looked destined to remain level until the 85th minute, when Southeastern capitalized on a late chance to edge back in front and hold on for the 3-2 win.
Despite the result, the RedTails showed grit throughout the match. Hobson and Zave Bernon-Stewart led the attack with multiple shots, while goalkeeper Roberto Romanelli made four saves to keep Hawkeye in the contest.
Head Coach Jorge Sierra Galeas praised his team's effort after the match.
"We had a good performance and showed heart and determination but unfortunately conceded in the last minute," he said. "It is an improvement from before, and I hope we take this and show even more determination on Saturday against another ranked team."
The RedTails will look to bounce back on Saturday, October 4, when they travel to Columbus, Nebraska, to face Central Community College-Columbus at Raider Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
