Short-Handed RedTail Team Finishes Fourth at Region XI Time Trial
OTTUMWA–The RedTail Men's Cross Country team took home a fourth place finish at the Region XI Time Trials, despite having two major contributors out of the event.
The RedTail squad was led by a group of three runners who all finished in the top 12 individually. The pace was set by Jonny Smith, a second-year runner who placed sixth at the meet with a time of 16:42.2. He was followed closely by freshman Sam Mickelson, who took the seventh spot with a time of 16:45.5. Not too far behind them was Payton Bahl, who just barely missed a top 10 finish when he placed 11th (17:23.8).
Rounding out the RedTail top five were talented freshmen Kegan Dally (33rd, 18:27.9) and Ryan Moore (42nd, 18:59.5). This was good enough to place fourth at the event and get the season off to a good start.
"I enjoy the time trial as it gives us a good idea where the athletes are and things we can improve on, like running as a pack and closing the gaps between gaps," said head coach Tyler Mulder. "Overall I'm excited for the men's team and the potential that they have to develop throughout the season."
