The Hawkeye Community College Men's Soccer team put together a strong first-half performance on the road Wednesday before falling 5–2 to a nationally ranked Iowa Lakes squad.
The Redtails matched the top-10 Lakers early, with Luke Hobson and Oscar Maule both scoring first-half goals to level the match 2–2 heading into halftime. Hobson struck first in the 20th minute off an assist from Owen Harvey, followed shortly by Maule's goal in the 27th minute, assisted by Alexander Aslanidis.
Despite a competitive start, Hawkeye played much of the second half a man down after a red card, allowing Iowa Lakes to pull away with three late goals.
Head Coach Jorge Sierra Galeas credited his team's early fight and effort, saying,
"We gave a good fight in the first half, going 2–2 against a top 10 team. Unfortunately, a red card conditioned us in the second half."
The Redtails will look to regroup and bounce back in their next matchup as the regular season winds down.
