The Hawkeye Community College Volleyball team faced a tough slate at the Parkland College Fall Invitational this past weekend, taking on two nationally ranked programs while closing out the tournament with a convincing win.
The RedTails opened play on Friday, September 19, against No. 4 Heartland Community College. Despite falling in straight sets, Hawkeye showed growth since their earlier meeting.
"Lost in three sets but played them much better than we did at their place at the end of August and the scores reflected that," said head coach Christy Mahi. "We still need to work on our efficiency with the offense and that will enable us to score more points."
Later that day, Hawkeye squared off with Wabash Valley College. The RedTails battled throughout and took the opening set, but unforced errors down the stretch proved costly in the 3–1 loss.
On Saturday, September 20, Hawkeye came out strong against No. 6 Parkland College, winning the first set before the nationally ranked Cobras responded to take the match.
"I was proud with how we came out and pressured them in set 1," Mahi said. "Our transition offense and defense was really solid throughout the match."
The RedTails closed the weekend on a high note, sweeping Danville Area CC behind their best offensive outing of the season. Hawkeye hit .323 as a team and posted 51 digs in one of their most complete performances of the year. "Overall, I am pleased with the weekend," Mahi added. "We battled two top-6 opponents and showed we can compete."
The RedTails return to action on Wednesday, September 24, when they host Southeastern Community College at 6:00 p.m. inside the HESC Building #13 in Waterloo.
